Color Mixing

I have had these color mixing sheets printed and laminated for about a year now and just got around to doing them. They came from Mama Jenn.

I am actually glad that I waited because he would not have been able to say ‘primary’ or ‘secondary’ prior to this month. His speech has really taken off in the last couple of weeks and it is exciting!

He had a lot of fun with this and did it several times.

Compass

This month, one of the Outdoor Hour Challenges was for magnets and compass. I decided to split this up, so we ended up doing a compass activity.

In her e-book she provided a note-booking page to map out your neighborhood. Instead of neighborhood we mapped out our back yard. We stood in the middle and found objects that point to North, South, East and West. He took a picture of the items and we then printed them out to make our map.
I also used the compass on my phone, since I do not have a real compass but hopefully, soon, the mail should be bringing me one.

Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…
I found out the exact date of when one of my close friends is moving back!!!!! I really am excited because I have missed her so much. It is amazing how when something leaves your life, that is when you realize how important something is to you.

In our homeschool this week…
I really enjoyed this week, maybe it was because I actually followed through with my schedule. :)
I think wingnut had a growth spurt mentally this week. Two days in a row he slept more than usual and then afterward he was talking in full sentences. Also, words are clearer and he is willing to try new words. It is nice actually being able to know what he is thinking, but man, everyone was right; once he started he does not stop :)
Nothing really new to say about math, literature or his reading lessons; they are moving along normally.
For art we switched out his painting that we take time to look at closely. For the next two weeks it will be Race Horses by Degas. Also, we took time this week to work on learning about the color wheel and what primary colors when mixed together make the secondary colors.
For our nature study this week, we worked on learning about North, South, East, and West by making a map of our back yard.

My favorite thing this week was…
Going on a treasure hunt with wingnut and my BIL.

Things I’m working on…
Trying to instill some chivalry into my son a little at a time. This week was helping bring groceries in. :)

I’m reading…
Still working on ‘the Dark Frigate’ and am almost done.

I’m grateful for…
Friends who accept me for who I am; nerd, geek and weird.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
I have a new obsession and am loving it! Geocaching.

Galls

This month, one of the Outdoor Hour Challenges was for Galls. Wingnut and I went for several walks to no avail, nada, nothing. :( But, when I was doing my research about galls I remembered two pictures that I had taken previously of weird things that I had no idea what they were. Guess what? They were galls! I am actually really happy to find out what they were.
This one randomly grew on leaves. Some had multiple pink nodules and some leaves had only one. I thought they were beautiful. Next year I am going to try finding it again so I can see what plant it grew and do some more research.

This one is an apple gall that grows on oak trees and caused by a wasp. I found this one when we went to California. Originally, I had though it was a normal part of an oak tree but now I know I was wrong, lol.

Walking

Last week I was able to get outside every single day and here are a couple pictures I wanted to share with you from our walks.

My first land art.

Quartz

This month, one of the Outdoor Hour Challenges was for quartz. I actually had three different types of quartz laying around my house that I have had since I was about ten years old and was in my ‘I love rocks’ phase :)

I had a quartz crystal, smoky quartz and a rose quartz to share with wingnut.

We took the parts of the note-booking page provided from Handbook of Nature Study’s new ebook and glued them into our nature journal. We then performed the two tests; will a knife scratch the quartz and will the quartz scratch glass.

To complete the day we proceeded to make rock candy.

The joys of eating sugar from the measuring cup.

He picked green for his rock candy and now all we need to do is wait :)

In my life this week…
Our neighborhood is redoing the sewer system and yesterday they had to dig a trench down the side of our house to the bathroom. This ended up being tricky for them because we had chickens running around the yard, they had to go past our fence and had to get their mini excavator in a five foot space. Now I need to replant the grass in my front lawn where they dug the trench. In the backyard I am not too worried about it.

In our homeschool this week…
This week went really well. Wingnut had a bit of interest in his math this week and we got a lot further then I had expected. I also brought out the abacus for him to start to learn how to use.
We did our reading of books and his reading lessons; nothing new or special in that area right now.
For his science we did a rock candy experiment and also learned about Quartz.
Two days this week I also had my BIL over to help him with his school work. Once again he is behind and we need to get him caught up.

My favorite thing this week was…
I had today off!! But I spent it sleeping most of the day so did not get much done.

Questions/thoughts I have…
Been thinking a lot about my nephew lately. He has been really stressed out lately. I am going to have him over this weekend to see if we can help him out.

Things I’m working on…
Trying to get some baby quilts done! Sometimes it is frustrating how little time I have for my hobbies.

I’m reading…
‘The Dark Frigate’ and I am really enjoying it.

I’m cooking…
I made a lentil soup that was really good. It looks disgusting when you look at it but tastes amazing.

I’m grateful for…
Extended family. It really does take a village to raise a child.

Have I Mentioned…

Wingnut has a pretend friend. He has had it for awhile and I just never mentioned it because it comes and goes. But we have been reading Paddington Bear together and he now says that his friend bear’s name is Paddington. :)
