Awhile ago I mentioned I would talk more about a folder system that we started incorporating into our day. It has been working out really well and wingnut loves it. I got the idea from Homeschool Creations. Basically, it is a folder version of the workbox system. I have a grid sheet for each day of the week, Monday through Friday, and number cards / subject cards velcroed to it. The nice thing about this is I can get the whole week set up on Sunday and not have to do it daily.

I then fill each folder up with an activity either from the letter of the week curriculum or random workbooks I have picked up. I then put a corresponding number on each page.

When I set it out wingnut will flip through the folder find something he would like to work on and then place the matching number from the grid onto the page. He then knows that he has done that activity. If it is a subject card that uses objects and not paper he just flips that one over on the grid to show that he has done it. I do not require him to do all the activities. He has a freedom to choose what he feels like doing. If that means we do not get to math that week, we do not do it. It is interesting to see what kinds of things he chooses to do from the activities. Right now he is absolutely not into anything that requires him to write or color, so those items never get touched. I still add them because when he feels he is ready they will be there for him.
Along with this system, I still have all the Montessori materials set up on his shelves for him to use at will. Also, I try to find out what he is into at the moment and make extra activities that have to do with those interests.
I must say, this is working really well for our family!
