Letter Sounds

Wingnut has been showing an abundant interest in letters lately. It really hit home when he was sounding out letters he was seeing on signs while riding in the car. I have been telling him the letter sounds randomly with no real sequence and his amazing memory astounds me. You tell him the sound once and he remembers it. So far he knows: a, b, c, d, e, f, h, k, m, o, p, s, and t. One weird thing is, I can have him sound out the letter sounds for some words like ‘sat’ and he will say every sound correctly but then he will not say the word in his everyday speech. I know he can pronounce it he just won’t say it. He is definitely my stubborn little boy :) Even the little girl who watches him on Mondays says he is stubborn, lol. So I decided that when I am homeschooling my brother-in-law on Wednesdays and Thursdays I would put together some activities and really start working on the letters sounds since he wants to. He know half of them already, we are almost there!

  1. It appears to me that he knows enough sounds of the alphabet to start Moveable alphabet . I also use a method called Spaulding that you can find online that uses cards to learn the alphabet sounds and then teaches the various sounds of all the phonogram combinations too . I have always had good success with doing the Montessori and Spaulding together even with children that needed extra help and repetition .

  2. Thank you for the tip! I will be looking that up soon. I was going to purchace the moveable alphabet with a whole bunch of other stuff in January but it looks like I will need to do that sooner like you said.

That is great that he is able to articulate the sounds. It will be interesting to see if he will have more interest in talking once you start working with your brother-in-law. Maybe watching your brother-in-law communicate with you and Wingnut wanting to talk to your brother-in-law will be motivation for him.
