Daily Learning

We have still been doing Montessori work around here. I don’t have pictures of the main things just because you have seen it before. I have decided to not put practical life exercises on the selves because I don’t have a lot of room and we do a lot of random practical life exercises everyday.

Here we are making bread.

I was sewing and he would not leave my sewing stuff alone so I gave him a pincushion and some styrofoam we had laying around. He did this for a really long period of time, putting them in the foam and then into the pincushion.

Our recycling program will not take pizza boxes so I like to put them in my compost pile but to have it decompose faster they should be in small pieces. The easiest way I found to do this is soak it in the tob and then it is easy to rip up.

Toilet cleaning.

I cleaned under the couch and found tons of cars so I had him wash them before he could play with them.

These are just some of the practical life exercises we do everyday.

He has been extremely interested in numbers and letters lately. I am starting to teach him the phonic sounds for the letters. He knows ‘A’, ‘S’ and ‘H” so far and can point them out in books. Speaking of books he has been very interested in them lately. Contrary to what everyone says I have never forced reading books on him, mainly because he hates to sit still and I did not want it to be a negative experience for him. This made it so that I did not read to him daily. I am glad I made this decision because now he literally brings me at least ten books for me to read to him every day. I do make sure he has tons of books available to read at all times and I read my books all the time in front of him. It is exciting to see him take such an interest in them :)

In the case of numbers he tries to count everything but every number is ten. I try to get him to say other numbers but he won’t. So I decided yesterday that I would teach him the ASL numbers and worry about saying the numbers later. I do know he understands the concept of two because he was going around the house the other day pointing out every thing that came in pairs like our shoes and then holding up two fingers :)

I love seeing him learn and enjoying learning!

  2. I agree with you if you are homeschooling and doing Montessori method at home you do not need a lot of Practical Life exercises on the shelf as it is already incorporated in the home environment .I think your prepared environment sounds perfect for your son.

Bear hasn’t been interested in the practical life trays (pouring, transferring, spooning, etc) for a while now and I think it is because since we’re at home, not in a school setting, there’s all this “real” practical life built into our day, especially with regards to food prep.
I have never had my 32 month old help with toilets though! It’s encouraging what you

sorry, published the comment before I was done. I have no idea what I was going to write in that last sentence since I got interrupted partway through it.

  5. Love the toilet and car washing! You could also play audiobooks while Wingnut is playing. It gets kids used to hearing the patterning and rhythm of reading as well as helping with inflection. The public library should have tons. I have also been told that you my be able to borrow and download audiobooks from your library’s website. =]

Baking is so fun! That’s something that BB and I like to do together too (but not bread. That’s too scary. :P ). That’s great that you get him involved in actual cleaning too. I really need to try and do more of that.
