Blogger’s Quilt Festival

I was sitting here, eating a bowl of chocolate ice cream, looking at all the beautiful quilts and wishing I had done more sewing so that I could enter something. That is when I realized I did have something to enter. This quilt is old and I am not expecting tons of praise on it. All I really wanted to do was share with my regular readers what would be considered my very first quilt. I always say I started quilting two years ago because that is when I actually started it as a hobby. But, if you go by the first quilt I ever made, it was 17 years ago. Since there is a 15 year gap of quilt making, I don’t think it counts as when I started to quilt :)

I was 13 years old. I did all the cutting (my mom hated the cutting part) and some of the sewing, the rest was done by my mom. A lot of the fabric in this quilt is from old dresses that my sister and I wore when we were little girls.

You can tell it gets well used and that I should probably mend it. Oh and the other blanket you see in the bottom left corner is my son’s blanket, he is taking a nap while I am taking pictures :P

Hope everyone is having a splendid time perusing the list, I know I am :)

Now that is a quilt that would be popular in our family because it looks so soft and loved. Plus, you can probably remember your outfits from it. Someday, I will post a picture of the quilt that my husband and daughter both vie for. It is old, falling apart, made from every kind of fabric, incl. knits, but it is very soft and lightweight and they both love it the best of all.

I love the story behind the old quilts hanging around in all of our houses. This one has been well loved hasn’t it? I can tell.

    Zonnah,

The best quilts are the ones that are well-used. Yours look sweet and “loved”, like Anne said.

  4. First quilts are wonderful, and there is no quilt more beautiful than a well-used and well-loved quilt! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Kathy says:

It’s a great quilt because you can tell that you loved it! I’m sure it’s fun to recall the fabrics from your older dresses.

  6. Our first and most simple quilts are often the dearest ones because they are so soft and well-loved. I’ve had to put my first quilts away because they were beyond repair, but they will never be thrown out! And scrappy quilts like this have plenty of stories behind them, right? Whose dress or blouse, who made it, who wore it, etc. So glad you did share!

A first quilt that has survived many years of use and love is most definitely what the Festival is about, I think! I wish I had some of the dresses my grandmother made me and my sister when we were little, they would make a wonderful quilt. Thank you for sharing your quilt’s story :)

I have nothing with me on the business trip to show but I am enhoying all the quilts. And your story struck a note. My mother was a quilter, and I really started after she died. I still have her 24″ SALEM ruler. The marks are almost gone but I use it with my other rulers for width. Everytime I pick it up, it is like she is here quilting with me. Quilts are like that.

Well loved quilts are great. I have two that are almost as worn as yours. One belongs to my daughter that I made. The other belongs to my husband that his mom made.

  11. Marjorie says:

I bet it’s fun to look back at those fabrics and remember what you loved to do wearing those clothes.
