Oh Dear

Wow, so I went to check how long we have been doing open ended art and it seems that we started in July. I can not believe that. It feels like we just started. Well, this last week for the first time since July I failed to have him do his art project. I have nothing to blame it on, I just plain forgot. I am allowed to every now and then right?

I was trying to think about what skills he has advanced in from doing open ended art every week and came up with a two things. First, he is starting to figure out gluing. I am very excited about this because I always see these projects that are not open ended and want to do them with him but they always involve gluing. Before he would have picked it all apart but not now :) Second, he is starting to take more time in what he draws. before it was just scribble scribble and now it is more deliberate. I love seeing how he progresses.

I love open ended art because he gets to have fun with no pressure when learning how to use different mediums. Don’t get me wrong I love non open ended art things as well but feel that at this age and for my sons personality it’s just not right for him yet. If he feels he can’t do something right the first time he won’t do it and that is why the open ended is so nice. It is building his self confidence.

Anyhoo, next week there will be an absence in an open ended art post as well because on Thursday we will be leaving to go to Nevada to see a friends wedding and I won’t have time to get things set up for wingnut before then.

What are your feelings on open ended art?

It sounds like open-ended art has really been working for Wingnut. Those are big progress areas! I don’t know that I do too much “open-ended” art with my boy, though for us any project is about process rather than product. It is a lot of fun watching him as his skills develop. :)

Have a great time in Nevada!
